William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, Pan-Africanist, civil rights activists who also authored several books. Dubois was the first American of African origin to get a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896 (Neyland, 47). During the first half of the 20th century Dubois was very influential and participated in founding the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. He proceeded to serve as the director of research for the association as well as the editor of its magazine up to 1934.
Dubois was born on 23 February, 1868 in Great Barrington Massachusetts. He was brought up by a single mother when his farther deserted him and the mother (Neyland, 23). His mother later suffered a stroke and he had to take up after school jobs to earn money to sustain them. He earned his first degree in 1888 at the Fisk University was later awarded a scholarship to study his bachelors at the Harvard University. He attended the University of Berlin for his graduate work in 1992, before getting a Ph.D. three years latter from Harvard University. He married twice first to Nina Gomer Dubois in 1896 and divorced in 1950. Later, he married Shirley Graham Du Bois in 1951 and divorced in 1977. In 1961, Dubois became totally disillusioned the US migrated to Ghana where he joined the communist party. While in Ghana he renounced his American citizenship. He passed on at 95 on 27, August 1963
W.E.B. Dubois fame resulted from his activism for the rights of the African Americans. He championed for the improvement of their living standards and conditions in addition to conducting research and publishes essays on issues facing African Americans.
