William Edward Burghardt
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, Pan-Africanist, civil rights activists who also authored several books. Dubois was the first American of African origin to get a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896 (Neyland, 47). During the first half of the 20th century Dubois was very influential and participated in founding the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. He proceeded to serve as the director of research for the association as well as the editor of its magazine up to 1934.
Dubois was born on 23 February, 1868 in Great Barrington Massachusetts. He was brought up by a single mother when his farther deserted him and the mother (Neyland, 23). His mother later suffered a stroke and he had to take up after school jobs to earn money to sustain them. He earned his first degree in 1888 at the Fisk University was later awarded a scholarship to study his bachelors at the Harvard University. He attended the University of Berlin for his graduate work in 1992, before getting a Ph.D. three years latter from Harvard University. He married twice first to Nina Gomer Dubois in 1896 and divorced in 1950. Later, he married Shirley Graham Du Bois in 1951 and divorced in 1977. In 1961, Dubois became totally disillusioned the US migrated to Ghana where he joined the communist party. While in Ghana he renounced his American citizenship. He passed on at 95 on 27, August 1963
W.E.B. Dubois fame resulted from his activism for the rights of the African Americans. He championed for the improvement of their living standards and conditions in addition to conducting research and publishes essays on issues facing African Americans. He championed for African capitalism and letter supported socialism and communism. He is also remembered as one of the founders of the Pan-African movement (Neyland, 139)
Cosgrove (11) asserts that Oprah Gail Winfrey is an African American television host and producer. She is also a renowned philanthropist. Oprah is well for her self-titled, talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that is multi-award winning and is the highest-rated program of this category in history.
The accomplishments of Oprah are numerous. In 1983, she moved to Chicago where she hosted WLS-TV’S half-hour mourning talk show, AM Chicago. The show, whose first episode aired on 2nd Jan, 1984 was the least rated but within months after her takeover, the show jumped from the bottom to overtake Donahue as the highest rated show in Chicago. The show was later named The Oprah Winfrey Show, extended to a full hour and broadcasting nationally commencing 8th Sep, 1986. Krohn (40) observes that the show tremendously grew gaining a big national audience and utterly displaced Donahue as the number one day-time talk-show in America and has since remained the best hosting prominent personalities and celebrities. Additionally, she co-starred in the movie “The Color Purple” as Sofia in 1985 and nominated for an Academic Award for Best Supporting Actress but lost. As a publisher, she has two magazines, O at Home and O, The Oprah Magazine and co-authored several books. She obtained the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2002 Emmy Awards for services to film and TV.
She was Born on 29th Jan, 1954 in Kosciusko in Mississippi and reared by her grandmother on a farm. She lived with her mother from the age of 6-13 in Milwaukee. At only 13, Oprah was sent to a juvenile detention home after suffering abuse and molestation, after getting a scholarship to attend Nicolet High School. She was sent to Nashville, Tennessee and attended East Nashville High School. It is here where she won an oratory contest and secured a full scholarship to Tennessee State University where she graduated in 1973 (Cosgrove 14).
She is one of the most influential media personalities in America for hosting her popular TV talk show that airs in 140 countries around the world, her production house, movies, book club, Broadway and angel network. According to Krohn (60) she is a philanthropist who has extensively worked in areas like child education and relief funds for disasters. In 2007, she invested $40 million to establish Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Oprah was also the first African American to become a billionaire.
According to Morris Mike, (1999) Michael Jordan danced the dance of prominence across hardwood floors of basketball arenas from New York to Loss Angeles to Barcelona as well as Paris for 13 brilliant years. He had a warrior’s heart and that made him surpass the sport and later became one of the twentieth-century global icons and also he contravened ethnic margins and became a mechanism in the ongoing racial healing process. He also represented the high mark on the evolutionary chart of basketball magnitude. The best thing he did for the NBA team was the winning shots, these he made during 1982 NCAA grand final against Georgetown. Because of Michael Jordan, the University of North Carolina became the 1982 NCAA champions. In 1984, he moved to Chicago where he also played. He became a millionaire, met a woman named Juanita, executive secretary at the American Bar Association whom he married and later gave birth to three kids.
Michael Jordan was born on 17th Jan 1963 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in Wilmington North Carolina. He has two brothers and is also married with three children. He was the Most Valuable Player from 1987 to 1998, NBA Finals MVP from 1990 to 1998, and the NBA Defensive Player of the year 1987 to 1988, was in eleven NBA All-Star games and also stared in the movie “Space Jam” asserts Morris, Mike (1999).
Michael Jordan became famous due to the fact that he was the best NBA superstar who had abilities of no any other player. Playing basketball with the University of North Carolina also made added to his fame. Michael Jordan was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1985 which also made him famous. Later in life Michael Jordan decided to retire after winning his last Championship in 1999 in order to devote his life to his wife and their three kids in his residence in Highland Park where he is happily enjoying his sequestration.
