Legalizing Marijuana

According to Thegooddrugsguide.com (2011), Cannabis is a drug that works by inducing a state of an intoxication where an individual experiences relaxation being dreamy and euphoria. Cannabis is considered to be a soft drug in comparison to others such as cocaine. In the United States, there is a huge debate over whether it should be legalized or not. In some states such as California, marijuana has been legalized for medical purposes only (Boire 28). This is for people who are suffering from illnesses such as cancer.

Marijuana is an illegal drug in the United States and it is only legal in some states that permit its use for medicinal purposes. Some of the reasons of its classification as an illegal drug include its status of an addictive drug which can lead to abuse. The people who are pro-legalization refute this by claiming that it is not an addictive drug. Also, the marijuana is said to not have any medical importance, but those who are for its legalization claim that the drug has had many benefits to those who have been using it. Marijuana is also considered to be a drug due to its association with lifestyles that are not fashionable (Boire 18). A lot of the people who consume this drug have unfashionable lifestyles and thus in most cases are not productive to national building. There are other reasons why marijuana is not legal.

Even though some states have legalized marijuana, the federal law considers the sale and cultivation of marijuana illegal. This has been of benefit to the state as it collects a lot of money in taxes from the sale of medical marijuana (Goode, 16). Some groups argue that the American government spends a lot of money fighting the drug; if it was legalized, the amount used to fighting marijuana would be channeled elsewhere.
