Large groups of researchers understand the information processing theory in different ways, but almost all of them agree on the fact that thinking itself is information processing (Siegler, 1991). Instead of concentrating on different stages in the development of young ones,, the focus is directed to the information that children disclose, the methods they use, and the memory limits for obtaining and analyzing certain pieces of information. In addition, information-processing theories of development give an emphasis to precise analysis of change mechanisms (Siegler, 1991). This paper aims to critically analyze the five information processing theories of childhood development, clearly highlight their difference and single out the most appropriate one according to my understanding.
Production-system theories integrate a huge variety of paradigms that explore long-term and short-term memory. Each production is similar to “if-then” principle and can clearly demonstrate what the system would do in a specific situation. The principal aim of neo-Piagetian theory is to maintain the power of Piaget’s approach while raising the strengths of information-processing approaches. Basically, it incorporates Piaget’s stages with the emphasis on goals, working memory limitations, and problem-solving techniques. Connectionist theories of learning are computer simulations of how thinking occurs. The main reason for enormous popularity of connectionist models is their general resemblance to the workings of the brain. Psychometric theory clarifies the processes measured by mental abilities tests, such as intelligence test. This is also known as the Intelligence Quotient test.
Evolutionary theory explains that competition among species is a basic aspect of existence. Species originate and change through two main processes: variation and selection.
In my opinion, Psychometric theory, which uses Intelligence Quotient, is the most coherent one. This is because it has proved to be effective and accurate over a prolonged period of time and it normally produces positive results despite some small errors.
